About midwifery.
Midwives are low-risk primary care providers who manage the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care of pregnant people and newborns. Midwifery care has been shown to reduce unnecessary medical intervention while upholding healthy outcomes for parents and babies.
We are funded through Alberta Health Services, meaning that our services are fully covered and accessible. Under midwifery care, you will be offered the same routine assessments and prenatal appointments that you would with any other healthcare provider.
Continuity of care
The midwifery model promotes the principle of continuity of care. Pregnant clients will be cared for by the same team of midwives throughout their pregnancy, birth, and up to six weeks postpartum. We aim to create a safe and supportive care relationship over this course of time. Your team of midwives will provide 24/7 urgent care access while your are under their care.
Informed choice
Our role is to provide information, resources, and recommendations that will support parents in making informed choices for their healthcare. The midwifery care model encourages pregnant people to be active participants in their care and decision-making.
Choice of birth place
Under midwifery care, you may choose to birth in the hospital, at a birth centre, or within your own home. The midwifery model offers choice of birth setting for low-risk pregnancies.
The first step to applying for midwifery care in Alberta is registering through the Association of Alberta Midwives.
